Freelancer en redacteur: hoe bouw je een goede relatie op?

Met zoveel freelancewerk in de journalistiek is de relatie tussen redacteur en freelancer een belangrijk onderdeel van het proces. Is de synergie goed, dan kan dat het verhaal naar een hoger niveau tillen. Maar de samenwerking kan ook gepaard gaan met uitdagingen. Gaandeweg een project blijkt bijvoorbeeld dat beide partijen toch niet zo goed op één lijn zaten als ze aan de start dachten. En terwijl een redacteur er soms mee worstelt hoe hij feedback geeft op een eerste versie die in zijn ogen nog werk nodig heeft, is de freelancer het niet altijd eens met redactionele ingrepen. Hoe communiceer je effectief met elkaar en bouw je een goede, duurzame werkrelatie op? Wat zijn de dos en don’ts voor beide partijen gedurende het hele proces, van pitch tot eindproduct?
Wetenschapsjournalist en redacteur Siri Carpenter van The Open Notebook vertelt ons tijdens een online Q&A-sessie graag haar tips en tricks, gebaseerd op haar ervaring aan beide zijden én haar achtergrond in psychologie.

Freelancer and editor: how to build a steady relationship
With so many journalists working freelance, the relationship between editor and freelancer is a crucial part of the process. If the synergy is right, it may lift a story up. But cooperation can also come with challenges. For example, along the way it may turn out that both parties weren’t quite on the same page when they agreed on doing the article. Or sometimes the editor struggles with how to ask a freelancer for revisions on a first draft, while the freelancer doesn’t always agree with edits. How do you communicate effectively with each other and build a steady, lasting working relationship? What are the dos and don’ts for both parties throughout the process, from pitch to end product?
Science journalist and editor Siri Carpenter from The Open Notebook is happy to tell us her tips and tricks in an online Q&A session on May 12, hosted by the Dutch association for Science Journalism and Communication (VWN). Carpenter will reflect on the success behind good working relationships based on experience on both sides ánd her background in psychology.
